Position Description

Volunteer Grocery Shoppers are needed to support seniors who are isolating, have mobility challenges, or otherwise struggle with shopping for and transporting groceries and other essential items back to their homes. Volunteer grocery shoppers take the senior's grocery order over the phone, complete the shop, and bring the groceries to the senior's home, while following strict health and safety protocals to prevent the spread of COVID-19. While the service itself is free of charge, the seniors pay for any items ordered through the Grocery Shopping service. The seniors all live in the Mount Pleasant area of Vancouver.

Deliverables/Duties: 

Volunteer Grocery Shoppers:

  • Take the senior's grocery order over the phone
  • Go to the grocery store for the senior to purchase the items the senior ordered
  • Take the groceries to the senior's home immediately following the shop
  • Take a picture of the receipt and email a copy of the receipt and order form to SOS program supervisor for reimbursement
  • Check in with SOS program supervisor on a weekly basis, light adminstrative tasks
Qualifications: 

All new MPNH volunteers must complete:

  • Volunteer Application Form
  • Volunteer Interview and Orientation - either in person or over the phone
  • Criminal Record Check

To volunteer within the SOS Program as a Grocery Shopper, volunteers must:

  • Be physically capable of carrying groceries and other essential items from the store to the senior's home 
  • Have a reliable vehicle that they can use to transport the groceries - volunteers cannot use public transportation to transport the groceries from the store to the senior's home (in order to reduce the amount of exposure and risk)
  • Have a cellphone with photo and email capabilities 
  • Intermediate English skills, though additional languages are an assest
  • Basic computer skills (email, microsoft word)
  • Attend an SOS orientation and training session - either in person or over the phone

Program Description

The Seniors Outreach Strategy (SOS) Program at MPNH provides a variety of free social and wellness services to seniors in the Mount Pleasant area in response to the COVID-19 epidemic. Our services include grocery shopping and delivery, transportation to medical appointments, telephone or virtual visiting, caregiver supports, as well as activities such as art supplies and a pen-pal club - other volunteer opportunities are available!
