Position description: 

Help visitors by providing information and directions related to the hospital services and program locations at VGH.

Vancouver General Hospital (VGH) is the second largest hospital in Canada and offers specialized health care services to residents in Vancouver and across the province. It can be challenging for visitors to find their way around the campus.

Our goal is to provide an enhanced patient and visitor experience while at the hospital, helping to create an atmosphere that is calm, caring, and compassionate, yet efficient and emphasizes 'people first'.

This role is wonderful experience for healthcare students who are looking for an opportunity to learn about the large and complex VGH campus.

This role is a wonderful experience for mature adults who are looking for an opportunity to share their time, their life experience, and compassion with patients, their families, and visitors in the community.

Deliverables/Duties: 
  • Stand behind the Information Desk facing the Main Entrance.
  • Provide assistance to people in the order they appear or approach the Information Desk.
  • Provide information and directions to people using the binders and maps for reference.
Qualifications: 
  • Must be 19+ years of age.
  • Must have excellent communication skills with the ability to approach the general public.
  • Must have strong interpersonal and problem solving skills.
  • Must be reliable, responsible, and punctual.
  • Must be patient, respectful, understanding, and compassionate.
  • Competency in English. Second language is an asset.

Additional Information: 

Time Commitment

  • Shifts vary between Monday to Friday, 7:00 am and 7:00 pm.
  • Regular weekly 3 hour shift.
  • Minimum commitment of 4 months.

  • Screening interview
  • Criminal Record Check
  • Two professional references

Volunteer Training and Support

  • Training and orientation provided by VCH Volunteer Resource Department
  • Two online training modules
  • Two training shifts with experienced Information Desk volunteers
  • Ongoing supervision and support provided by Coordinator, Volunteer Resources
