Position description: 

A world-renowned festival of performing arts for young audiences, the Vancouver International Children's Festival has been educating, entertaining and inspiring youg audiences since 1978. The 2020 festival is scheduled to take place on Granville Island from May 25 to May 31, 2020. With a line-up of at least 10 shows every day, the Festival is looking for 25 ushers every day of the Festival.

The Usher will work at one of the 7 venues during the week of the Festival and provide impecabble customer service to our audiences of 1) teachers and K-G12 students during the week and 2) families during the week-end. Previous experience ushering is a plus.

Individual applicants must be available for a minimum of two shifts during the following times: 

Monday to Friday day shifts are from 9:15am to 2:30pm.

Saturday and Sunday day shifts are from 9:45am to 5pm.

We are also looking for five evening ushers on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 5pm to 9pm. 

The Festival welcomes retired teachers, social workers as well as corporate groups to apply for the position. In case of a group, please contact us to figure out the day(s) your group is available to volunteer, it is a great way to give back to the community, build teamwork, get involved in an arts festival, and have fun!

A two-hour training session will be provided on Granville Island on Sunday May 24 - hour to be confirmed. It is strongly recommended that ushers attend this educational session to get familiar with Granville Island, the venue and meet the Front of House.


Applicants should be charismatic and very comfortable speaking to the public. 

Duties include: helping with line-ups and crowd control, taking tickets, ushering patrons to their seats to ensure that everyone is able to quickly settle into their seats, enforce safety rules during the show and help with post-show clean-up. If there is any emergency or a patron needs to go to the washroom, the ushers will guide and assist the patrons safely out of the venue with a flashlight.
