Volunteer Position Summary

The SMART Group Facilitator plays a vital role in supporting addictions services clients in their recovery/ reintegration into their community. Volunteers lead weekly meetings using SMART methods based on the concepts of Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) techniques. This role will be of particular interest to those wishing to pursue a professional degree, or career in social work, counselling or health


Be scheduled for a regular role as facilitator or co-facilitator.
Set-up the meeting room and put out SMART materials.
Greet clients attending the meeting.
Ensure that everyone is included and has the opportunity to participate as much as they want.
Regular supervision meetings with staff for training and guidance around group facilitation.
Listening without judging or giving advice.
Facilitate group meetings leading the group through structure activities and discussion, using SMART group materials to focus on developing a healthy, balance lifestyle. 



Must be minimum 19 years of age or older.
Be comfortable in groups and take a leadership role.
Volunteers in recovery are required to have a minimum of 6 months from their last attended core VCH recovery group and be active in maintaining their recovery.
Patient, understanding and respectful; Good listening and communication skills.
Adherence to VCH Volunteer Guidelines and Code of Ethics.

Attend required training facilitated by VCH staff prior to placement

Time Commitment

Two hours per week for 4 – 6 months.
VCH SMART groups run weekly and often take place around lunchtime and early evening.
SMART groups are 1 hour in length with another 30 minutes needed for setting up/tidying away.

Additional Information

The intake process includes a screening interview, successful completion of a Criminal Record Check, and two suitable references - not from family or friends.
Volunteers attend seven 2.5 hour training workshops developing facilitator skills.
The suitability of a volunteer in a Refuge Recovery Group facilitator placement is at the discretion of VCH staff.
Ongoing support of the placement is the responsibility of the SMART Group Coordinator.
