SHOP-BY-PHONE GROCERY PROGRAM - EASTSIDE
Mary's B. Story
Mary is 90 years old and has lived in her home for 50 of those years. She is no longer able to drive and is quite frail. Her desire is to live her remaining years in her own home is strong. With the help of some very dedicated volunteers her access to nutritious food and household items are being met. The friendly and caring Shop by Phone program volunteers take her order over the phone each week, shop for her groceries at a local Safeway and process through the checkout. The Safeway delivery service then delivers and brings her groceries right into her kitchen. Without a way to access her daily food needs it is likely she would have to move to a care facility. Mary is so appreciative and has said to the volunteers "before Shop by Phone I was eating a lot of tea and toast, now I can order fresh fruit, eggs, cereal, and buy my favourite shamboo. The big bonus too is speaking to you lovely people once a week"
How can you help?
Volunteers in the Shop by Phone program assist home bound seniors and disabled adults to remain independent with the assistance with their weekly grocery shopping. Volunteers receive a training manual and have orientation and training with Coordinator, Volunteer Resources at one of two Safeway locations. Clients call the program's phone line where a phoner volunteer writes up their order. Shopper volunteers then shop the listed items which are then delivered by the Safeway delivery service. Program is run by teams of volunteers 4 mornings a week. HAVE FUN WHILE MAKING A DIFFERENCE!
