Seniors Basic Computer Skills Instructor

Position description: 

Mount Pleasant Neighbourhood House (MPNH) is a leader in building a healthy and engaged neighbourhood by connecting people and strengthening their capacity to create change. 

We are searching for tutors to facilitate a welcoming, approachable computer class aimed at newcomer seniors on Thursdays. This class helps introduce and teach basic computer skills such as typing, Microsoft Word, email, web browsing, Google maps, internet safety, etc. The class is relatively small (6-8 learners), and while there has been native English speaking learners, most have basic to intermediate English skills, so teaching English is a component of the class. 

Deliverables/Duties: 

-Facilitating a basic computer skills class in our computer lab 

-Planning a lesson/topic to teach the class, based on the participants interests

-Teaching participants minor English points, typically vocabulary or phrases related to computers

-Setting up and shutting down the room, taking attendance, other small miscellaneous administration tasks

Qualifications: 

New volunteers at Mount Pleasant Neighbourhood House are required:

To submit a volunteer application, including two non-family references

To complete a criminal record check

To complete MPNH's orientation

 

To volunteer with our Seniors' Computer Class, volunteers should be:

Patient, caring, empathic and welcoming towards all other volunteers, staff, and guests from a diverse range of ages and cultural backgrounds

Comfortable enough with their own computer/internet literacy to be able to teach basic computer/internet skills

Happy to tutor non-native English speakers, willing to teach vocabulary and simple phrases,
