Ride Don't Hide Volunteer - Support Rider

Position description: 

Mental health and the stigma of mental illness are huge issues in our community. By volunteering at Ride Don't Hide (Sunday June 24, 2018), you can support mental health programs and take an active role in fighting stigma. Ride Don’t Hide is a community bike ride hosted by the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA), with the aim to engage 2,000 riders and raise $260,000 for mental health programs in our community. Support riders ride with the participants along the route to make sure the group stays on course and no one gets left behind. Volunteers can choose to be a support rider for the 10km, 20km, 60km, or 100km route.

Deliverables/Duties: 

- You can choose to be a 10km, 20km, 60km, or 100km support rider
- Know the route well so you can answer basic questions on where the ride goes, and also to help with minor mechanical fixes.
- The start will be staggered, and one or two support riders will accompany each wave as they leave the stadium.
- As the ride gets going and riders spread out, it isn’t necessary to stay with the group you started in, but please try to ride with a group in case they have questions about the route or need a helping hand with a tire change.
- We don’t want support riders riding on their own, or in a group of support riders

Qualifications: 

- Experienced cyclist
- Have a bike
- Must be able to ride the route chosen (10km, 20km, 60km, or 100km)
- Reliable
- Know the route well
- Able to work independently or with another person
- Self-motivated
- Positive

Additional Information: 

- Support riders must attend an orientation/training session (dates and times TBA) to familiarize themselves with the role, route, safety procedures, and meet other support rider volunteers
- Indicate on your application which route you want to ride (10km, 20km, 60km, or 100km)
- Free volunteer T-shirt
- Opportunity to sign up for future volunteer opportunities with CMHA
- Live music entertainment & festivities after the ride is complete
