Position description: 

This is an outdoor experience for families with young children.  The sessions will run rain or shine and allow the children to experience the elements and play with natural materials. The volunteer interacts with the children in the park, assisting with supervision and socialization, imagination and exploration. Children learn to trust other adults and parents learn different ways of interacting with their children.

New Westminster Family Place is a family resource program for families with children 0 - 5 years old. Many families are new to parenting, new to the City or new to the country. The reality of parenting can be overwhelming especially with no extended family to help. Here families meet each other to share the joys and challenges of parenting. By providing families with services and resources we help them thrive. 

Minimum commitment, one session per week for 3 months. This program operates outside on Friday mornings, rain or shine.

Deliverables/Duties: 

Do you love children and the outdoors?  Are you interested in outdoor education opportunities?  Join us!

Play. Learn. Have FUN outdoors in a nature based program. Volunteers assist Early Childhood Education (ECE) certified staff & parents in activities with children from newborn to 5 years old. Assist staff with set up and clean up of materials and equipment. This program runs Friday mornings at Queens Park.

Qualifications: 

You love being outdoors in any weather, have a genuine interest in young children and are comfortable initiating interaction with children. A friendly, welcoming personality is essential.  Minimum 14 years of age & minimum Intermediate English skills. Satisfactory results of criminal record check and contact with two references is required.

Excellent experience for those considering a career working with young children especially for outdoor education experience.

Most post secondary programs require a set number of volunteer hours working with young children. Example - Early Childhood Education, teaching certification.

Requires an application, interview, satisfactory results from a criminal record check and contact with 3 references
