The Orientation Volunteer will receive new clients after an initial intake and screening process. Orientation volunteers will introduce newcomers to Vancouver, describe the process of settling in the city, and give information about services they are eligible for. In this role, you will be ensuring that all refugee claimants feel greeted, secure, and ready to explore Vancouver. You are likely be their first friend in Vancouver. A connection they won’t easily forget.
4.5 - 7.5 hour shifts are available Monday - Friday 9:30 am - 4:30 pm.
Explain settlement process
Go through orientation package (information concerning basic needs)
Teach clients how to search for housing
Give clients a tour of the welcome center
Search for clothing with clients in the clothing bank
Walk to the sky train to teach clients how to use compass cards
Make tea for clients and help them feel relaxed
Keep basic notes and statistics
Other assistance as necessary
Consent to a Criminal Record Check
Knowledge of English
Knowledgeable about Vancouver
Experience working with newcomers
Experience immigrating to Canada as a refugee claimant
Knowledge of a Secondary Language (Arabic, Farsi, Dari, French, Kurdish, etc.)
