Vancouver Coastal Health offers a nonjudgmental, non-coercive provision of Harm Reduction services to clients with current needle use that includes offering clean supplies, health education and referral to other services. Needle exchange assistants assist with being the first point of contact to clients returning used needles and wishing to gain clean supplies. Volunteers are responsible for maintaining the supply stock, monitoring the medical waste container needle levels and connecting with clients.

Deliverables/Duties: 

 

  • Greet clients accessing the Harm Reduction Kiosk and determine their needs
  • Track Harm Reduction stats on CHC form provided (CHC specific)
  • Ensure client understands how to dispose of returned needles in a safe manner
  • Check needle levels in yellow medical waste container; estimate volume/# of returned needles
  • Maintain inventory and supply tracking for the Harm Reduction Kiosk
  • Provide Harm Reduction supplies as requested by client(s)
  • Provide information about CHC & community resources, this includes some ‘wayfinding’ to these services; it is NOT a “referral”.
Qualifications: 
  • Commitment to harm reduction principles and procedures
  • Being reliable, approachable and assertive
  • Being non-judgmental to the diverse populations accessing the needle exchange
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Competency in English

  • Volunteer Screening Process:  Interview, Criminal Record Check, 2 Positive References
  • Mandatory Training:  VCH Harm Reduction Course (3 Hours – Online); Naloxone Online Certificate Course and VCH Naloxone Workshop with Harm Reduction Coordinator
  • Orientations:  i) Site, and ii) Activity Specific Tasks
