Position description: 
  • Provide support to the Income Tax Clinic by assessing the eligibility criteria for low income seniors and people with disabilities
  • Attend a volunteer orientation session by (OANH)
  • Communicate with (OANH) Coordinator of Community Programs on ongoing basis during the Income Tax season
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality
  • Availability throughout the months of March, April
  • Sensitivity to diverse client needs
  • Volunteers will contact the front desk one day prior to each volunteer session to find out the appointment and call the clients to confirm their appointment.
  • Volunteers will meet with the clients at OANH computer lab and complete filing of tax returns online
  • Prepare simple income-tax returns for eligible individuals.
  • Keep tally of the number of clients served.
  • Observe the Canadian Revenue Agency’s filing rules and maintain strict client confidentiality.
  • Communicate effectively with OANH staff and volunteers
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills with good time management.
  • Completed the training and registration process provided by the Canada Revenue Agency through the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program
  • Have a CRA e-File number in good standing (renewed this year)  
  • Ability to work with a minimum of supervision.
  • A personal computer able to download the software available from CRA is an asset.
  • Experience working with people from diverse backgrounds and familiarity with social service organizations
  • Comfortable working with numbers and processing income tax returns
  • Accounting or bookkeeping experience will be an asset
  • Ability to problem solve and work independently
  • Good computer skills
  • Good Communication skills
  • Knowledge of a second language will be an asset
  • Clear criminal record check

The demographic of clients being served often includes vulnerable and unsupported individuals in tax support.
