Position description: 

George Pearson Centre (GPC) is a long-term residential care facility that offers services to adults with physical disabilities. Volunteers spend quality time visiting or participating in hobbies or interests.   Provide companionship to residents who have few personal contacts.



Spend time with your assigned resident each week.  Adjust time with the resident depending on their needs (e.g. if they are not feeling well your visit may be shorter than usual).

Visits can include but are not limited to:

  • Assisting resident with letter writing
  • Assisting resident with organizing their closet, bedside table, etc.
  • Discussing current events, news, sports, explore common interests
  • Escorting resident around the buildings and grounds of George Pearson Centre
  • Reading aloud from favourite book, magazines, or newspaper
  • Attending on-site events and activities
  • Assisting resident in the computer room
  • Listening to music or audio books together
  • Playing cards or board games
  • Working together on jigsaw puzzles
  • Encouraging hobbies

Volunteers are encouraged to socialize with residents and can share relevant personal experiences but should never reveal excessive personal information or develop emotional attachments to residents. 

Training & Support:

  • Volunteer orientation provided by Coordinator, Volunteer Resources
  • Ongoing supervision and support provided by Recreation Therapy staff

Skills or Qualifications Required:

  • An interest in working with people with disabilities
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills        
  • Reliable and responsible
  • Ability to initiate conversations and work independently
  • Confident and able to set boundaries
  • Mature and patient

Additional Information: 
  • Screening interview
  • Must be 19+ years or older
  • Minimum commitment - 4 months
  • Complete an online Criminal Record Check
  • Complete two short online trainings
  • Provide two professional references (not family or friends)
  • Competency in English (Spoken and written)
  • Completion of application process
