Position description: 

George Pearson Centre (GPC) is a long-term residential care facility offering services to residents with physical disabilities.  On-site activities and events provide opportunities for residents to relax and socialize in a casual and friendly atmosphere.  Volunteers assist staff in program delivery and socialize with the residents.

  • Assist in the set up of tables, equipment, and decorations and the preparation of refreshments, as required.
  • Promote the activity or event by visiting residents on their wards and encouraging them to participate. 
  • If required, escort participating residents to the activity area.
  • Prepare teas and coffees and serve them to residents but only under the direction of staff.
  • Socialize with residents.
  • Initiate and oversee the activity. 
  • On occasion, volunteers may be assigned to one individual resident during the activity or event
  • Volunteers may need to provide some assistance to residents with physical limitations to participate in games and activities (i.e. holding cards for the residents)
  • Ensure resident safety at all times.  Consult with recreation staff if you are unsure whether a procedure is safe or not. This includes serving beverages or food to residents as they may have dietary restrictions.
  • If required, escort residents back to their ward, room or other location as identified by resident.
  • Assist in clean up of the activity area including returning equipment and supplies to storage areas.

Training & Support:

  • Volunteer orientation provided by Coordinator, Volunteer Resources
  • Ongoing supervision and support provided by Recreation Therapy staff
  • An interest in working with those with challenges
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills        
  • Reliable, responsible and punctual
  • Strong problem solving skills
  • Ability to initiate conversations and work independently
  • Friendly and able to interact well with others

Additional Information: 
  • Attend screening interview
  • Must be 19+ years or older
  • Minimum commitment – 4 months
  • Complete an online Criminal Record Check
  • Complete two short online trainings
  • Provide two professional references (not family or friends)
  • Competency in English (verbal, written, read)
  • Complete the application process to become a VCH volunteer
