Position description: 

Mount Pleasant Neighbourhood House (MPNH) is a leader in building a healthy and engaged neighbourhood by connecting people and strengthening their capacity to create change. 

We are searching for tutors to facilitate our Seniors English Conversation Club, which is a welcoming, approachable, relaxed English class for newcomer seniors on Thursdays. This class helps seniors learn conversational English skills with other seniors in a supportive environment. Topics covered include simple grammatical tenses and points, useful vocabulary and phrases, and valuable knowledge about life in Vancouver, such as taking transit or using the library.  The class typically has around 15-20 participants, ranging from beginner to intermediate English levels. 

Deliverables/Duties: 

-Facilitating a basic English conversation class in our neighbourhood house

-Planning a lesson/topic to teach the class, based on the participants interests

-Teaching participants simple grammatical tenses and points, useful vocabulary and phrases, and valuable knowledge about life in Vancouver

-Setting up and shutting down the room, taking attendance, other small miscellaneous administration tasks

Qualifications: 

New volunteers at Mount Pleasant Neighbourhood House are required:

To submit a volunteer application, including two non-family references

To complete a criminal record check

To complete MPNH's orientation

 

To volunteer with our Seniors' English Conversation Club, volunteers should be:

Patient, caring, empathic and welcoming towards all other volunteers, staff, and guests from a diverse range of ages and cultural backgrounds

Comfortable with seniors, able to cater to their unique strengths and challenges

Fluent in English, able to explain grammar, sentence structure and vocabulary in simple terms (it's not necessary to be a native speaker, but very strong English skills are a must)
