Emergency Waiting Room Volunteer
The volunteer provides support and information to patients, families and visitors in the Emergency Department, complementing the treatment services provided by professional staff. Provide patient comfort measures (tissues, warming blankets, pillows and water);Offer activity books to children in patient areas and waiting room; liaise with staff to provide information to family members; escort family members to patients in the treatment areas within the Emergency Department; help to arrange rides for patients and/or families; assist patients in navigating the registration process.
Minimum age: 18 and graduation from high school.
Comfortable with urgent situations; ability to remain calm in a traumatic environment and the ability to maintain confidentiality at all times.
Good understanding of policies, boundaries and limitations of the volunteer role.
Physical ability to stand for 2-3 hours.
Knowledge and compliance with infection control requirements.
Patient and comfortable with public sector; courteous, mature, caring and non-judgmental.
Good communication skills; ability to direct appropriate questions and concerns to the proper staff.
Ability to work independently and be assertive. Punctual and reliable.
Ability to commit to volunteering for one year..

A letter of reference may be requested upon completion of 75 hours of volunteer service.
A satisfactory vulnerable sector criminal record search is required.
An influenza vaccination is required if volunteering between Dec 1 - March 31
