Position description: 

Free Geek Technology Centre is a non-profit organization passionate about creating a better future while diverting e-waste by sustainably reusing technology, enabling digital access, and providing training and education to the community.Since 2006, Free Geek has diverted over 780 tonnes of electronic waste, rebuilt more than 4,200 computers to re-sell for low (or no) cost, and trained more than 9,700 volunteers.

The Free Geek Store re-sells second-hand hardware (laptops, computers, monitors, phones etc.) that has been analyzed, refurbished, data-wiped, tested and prepared for the shelves at an affordable price. As an Electronics Evaluation volunteer, you will work with other volunteers to identify and test hardware (phones, printers, monitors, cameras, speakers, keyboards etc.), and decide whether a device should be recycled or refurbished. Among the devices you will learn about are optical drives, power supplies, monitors, video and other peripheral cards, and network devices.

Responsibilities:

-Learn Free Geek’s Reuse testing procedures

-Triage devices for reuse or recycling

-Prepare devices and their peripherals for sale/disbursement

-Follow documentation for testing procedures of various gizmos

-Share in ensuring the functionality of the area: maintain organization of work area, clean up after oneself after the end of each shift, help with recycling and correct routing of gizmos

-Potential to create and document new tests for odd gizmos

-Implement data security procedures as needed

Qualifications: 

-Some knowledge of computer and electronics hardware

-Understanding of Free Geek’s mission and open-source philosophy

-Aptitude for learning detailed, complex tasks and protocols

-Awareness of data security issues

-Ability to follow directions

-Detail-oriented

-Basic internet research skills

-Understanding of current electronics market is a plus
