Position description: 

West End Seniors' Network has a Driving Program and an Accompaniment Program.

The Volunteer Drivers provide transportation for clients who need to get to medical and critical appointments in the West End and Metro Vancouver.

The Accompaniment Volunteer walks, takes a taxi or transit with senior to appointments in the West End, waits for them, then accompanies the senior back home.

Sometimes, the Accompaniment Volunteer are driven, with the senior, to the senior's appointment by a Driving Volunteer.

Drivers and Accompaniment Volunteers make a tremendous difference in the lives of seniors by providing free transportation and reassuring accompaniment where there are no other options.

If you love people, enjoy driving or would like to accompany a senior and have a few spare hours a week, this volunteer position is for you.

For Drivers: If you don't have a vehicle, the West End Seniors' Network has an account with a vehicle co-op: Modo, where volunteers can book vehicles (under our expense) to drive seniors to appointments.

For Accompaniment Volunteers: The senior would pay for any taxi/transit expenses. If walking it is usually a short distance within the West End. If taking transit or taxi, it can be for longer distances (within Vancouver).

This volunteer position is part of a team of drivers and accompaniment volunteers and the time commitment is flexible. Driving and accompaniment requests from clients vary from week to week .

The position can begin at any time convenient to you, pending the return of the Criminal Record Check, though we do need people as soon as possible :)

Qualifications: 

For Drivers: Valid Driver's License, Clean driving abstract and Criminal record check (free)
For Accompaniment Volunteers: Ability to walk short distances within the West End, ability to take transit if required (walking is more common).Criminal Record Check (free).

Meeting new people and helping make a difference in the lives of seniors who cannot make important health appointments without assistance.

We have the forms for the Criminal Record Check, and send them to the government to process, which usually takes about 3-4 weeks to clear.
