During this time of social isolation, are you looking for meaningful ways to connect with people and help them reach their potential? Do you want to help others sharpen your writing skills and increase their portfolio? The Starfish Canada is looking for editors to coach and mentor young writers as they share their articles and stories for our national audience of environmental change-makers.
Our award-winning editorial program pairs volunteer writers and editors together to create content for our online journal. Editors are the support systems for our writers, acting as guides that not only help edit their articles, but take their learnings and help them apply it in various steps of the writing process. We’re on the lookout for people who approach conversations with curiosity and kindness to assist our team in producing great content for our online site.
Time commitment: About 5 hours per month (volunteer commitments renew every six months)
All correspondence is conducted online and we will provide a writing and editing manual and online training to assist in the creative process.
Our deliverables are an article on a timeline determined by the writer and editor. At a minimum, writers should produce articles on a monthly basis.
In turn, editors will work with each writer to determine how they can best guide their journey. Some writers might ask for 2 hours of help a month through video calls, and some might prefer email communications. We appreciate editors that are open to possibility and are willing to encourage and support writers in whatever ways feel comfortable for both parties.
In this role, we are looking for people with a demonstrated aptitude for online content creation, but most importantly, we're looking for people that like coaching and mentoring others and facilitating conversations that help people grow their potential.
Our expectation is that:
- You feel comfortable to lead work together, to make mistakes, and to learn from them.
- We want you to learn as a part of your experience here (and we are also excited to learn from you). We hope that you feel comfortable asking lots of questions, no matter how small.
- You don’t expect you to have all of the answers. We prefer team members that are honest about what they understand. We appreciate team members that are okay to give and receive feedback and are willing to have fun with a wonderful team.
At The Starfish Canada, we believe that a diverse workforce is the key to success. We encourage applications from all people interested in the role, including youth, LGBTQ2+ and BIPOC peoples, and all genders and sexual orientations.
