Company Program Volunteer Mentor

Position description:

Junior Achievement of BC (JABC) is a member of JA Canada and JA Worldwide, the world’s largest not-for-profit organization dedicated to educating young people about business. In 2017-18, over 38,000 BC students benefited from JABC programs delivered free of charge by volunteers bringing their real-life business experience into the classroom. JABC programs focus on work readiness, financial literacy and entrepreneurship, giving students the confidence and skills they need to become the next generation of business and community leaders.

Our JA Company Program provides students in Senior High the opportunity to meet on a weekly basis with mentors from the business community. Over the course of sixteen weeks, the students will take an actual product or service all the way from brainstorming through development to marketing and sales. Along the way, the students will learn about finance, business plans and the roles to be played in a company, among many other aspects of running a business. And they have fun while they’re doing it! We also provide scholarships and awards to the top performers each year. For many students, participating in the Company Program has a profound influence on their career path and their lives.

This video provides a short summary on what it’s like to volunteer with the Company Program:

And these ones show what the students were able to accomplish with the Program:

Full training and resources on the Company Program are provided in advance of the mentor working with students. And JABC program staff continue to support the volunteers throughout the Program.

We will have programs running in the Lower Mainland starting in September through January that are in need of volunteers from the local business community. These are primarily “In School” programs (which are led by teachers with the support of mentors), but we also have "After School" programs available which are led by teams of volunteer mentors.  Programs will run in Vancouver, Surrey, Richmond and the North Shore.

For more information on JABC and our Company Program, please visit our website: .If you would like to volunteer with our Company Program, we would like to hear from you!

Volunteer mentors will be responsible for delivering the Company Program to a group of students over a period of approximately four months. Mentors meet with students on a weekly basis, usually for one to two hours, depending on the program. In-school programs are delivered with a teacher who has primary responsibility for the program. After School programs are delivered at an office or community centre location by a group of three to four volunteer mentors.

We are interested in members of the business community who have a few years of experience that they can draw on when working with the students. Being able to share stories of success and challenges from your own career will enrich the experience for the students. Those who have recently retired or those who are studying business in university are also welcome to apply to be volunteers with us. Ideally, you will also have had experience working with young people and are capable of facilitating a session for up to 20 people.
