Children's After School Program Volunteer

Position description: 

Kiwassa’s Children’s Program is looking for responsible, energetic, caring people to contribute to our after school programming for children ages 5-12. Volunteers work closely with program leaders to implement engaging curriculum and activities and build trusting and lasting relationships with the diverse and vibrant children in our neighbourhood.

The after school program runs Monday to Friday from 3:00-5:00 p.m., with volunteer shifts available for one or more days per week depending on your schedule.

The position is ideal for someone who is reliable and has experience working with children or is seeking practical experience working with children. Speaking English is required; second language is an asset. Specialized skills that you are willing to share with program leaders and children are considered an asset: cooking, arts, music, dance, sports, etc.  Kiwassa volunteers enjoy the benefits of skill building and leadership development opportunities, and we will provide a reference upon request after three months of volunteering with us.We give preference to neighbourhood residents and those interested in making a long-term commitment (6 months or more) to our program. 

  • Spend time with children, engaging in positive interactions and ensuring their safety
  • Assist program leaders in activities such as games, sports, arts and crafts, and cooking classes
  • Help with setting up and cleaning up before and after programs

Ideally, we're looking for someone who is:

  • Reliable, friendly, patient and comfortable with children
  • Enjoys working in multi-cultural settings
  • Has musical, artistic, cultural or other special skills or interests to share with the children
  • Completed criminal record check

We are always looking for fun, enthusiastic, responsible and community-minded people to join our volunteer family. You don’t have to have a specific skill or be an expert to start volunteering with us, as long as you are willing to learn, share, contribute and make a difference in the community.

We look for support in many areas of our programming. Our volunteers work with children, youth, seniors and neighbours of all ages. Our volunteers prepare meals in the kitchen, provide tutoring support, support newcomers with interpretation, chat with neighbours at our community events, and help keep things organized behind the scenes. We have volunteers supporting in diverse community programs like crafts, dance, foodbank, summer camp, daycare and English as a Second Language classes.

We offer ongoing training for our volunteers, and an opportunity to develop your leadership, facilitation and community engagement skills. Volunteer work is a great way to gain new skills and give back to your community!
