Position description: 

Interactive cooking with pre-schoolers. New Westminster Family Place is a family resource program for families with children 0 - 5 years old. Many families are new to parenting, new to the City or new to the country. The reality of parenting can be overwhelming especially with no extended family to help. Here they meet each other to share the joys and challenges of parenting and are able to attend parent education classes and receive information and support from the staff. We help parents to provide a good start for their children by promoting, encouraging and providing family related services and learning skills program with a preventative and educational focus. The volunteer interacts with the children in the playroom, assisting with supervision and socialization. This program has a food and cooking focus so you will help the children measure and chop ingredients for the day's delicious treat. Encourage imagination with the dress up clothes, promote the love of reading by sharing a book, experiment with gravity with block towers. The children learn to trust other adults and parents learn different ways of interacting with their children.
Minimum commitment, one session per week for 3 months. This program is closed when the school is closed for holidays and professional development days.

Deliverables/Duties: 

Play. Sing. Learn. Have FUN. Volunteers assist Early Childhood Education (ECE) certified staff & parents in playroom with children (simple cooking,free play, story-time & art.) - newborn to 5 years. Assist with set up and clean up before and after the session. This program runs Tuesday mornings when the school is open.

Qualifications: 

Minimum 14 years of age & minimum Intermediate English skills. Genuine interest in young children and friendly, welcoming personality essential. Comfortable initiating interaction with children. Two references and satisfactory police record check required.

Basic orientation working with children.
Excellent experience for those considering a career working with young children. Most post secondary programs require a set number of volunteer hours working with young children. Example - Early Childhood Education.
Satisfactory results from a police record check and contact with 3 references. Coffee / Tea provided.
