Position description: 

New Westminster Family Place is a family resource program for families with children 0 - 5 years old. Many families are new to parenting, new to the City or new to the country. The reality of parenting can be overwhelming especially with no extended family to help. Here they meet each other to share the joys and challenges of parenting along with information and support from the staff. We help parents to provide a good start for their children by promoting, encouraging and providing family related services and learning skills program with a preventative and educational focus. The playroom volunteer provides extra hands and help for the children while parents collect their groceries or meet with staff to learn about other resources. The children learn to trust other adults and parents learn different ways of interacting with their children.

Sessions are held at Shiloh-Sixth Avenue United Church on Thursday mornings. This drop-in is part of the Hospitality Project at the Food Bank. Minimum commitment is one 2 1/2 hour session per week for 3 months.

Deliverables/Duties: 

Play. Sing. Learn. Have FUN. Volunteers assist Early Childhood Education (ECE) certified staff & parents to supervise and interact with the children in the play area - newborn to 5 years old. Assist with set up and clean up before and after the session.

Qualifications: 

Minimum intermediate English skills, second language an asset. Genuine interest in young children and a friendly, welcoming personality essential. Must show initiative interacting with children in a positive manner. Comfortable working in a busy, noisy environment. Ability to safely and securely lift and carry children.

Additional Information: 

Basic orientation working with children. Excellent experience for those considering a career working with young children. Also of interest to those thinking of Social Services careers as you will become aware of some of the issues and services available to low income families. Many post secondary programs require volunteer hours working with families and children. Example, Early Childhood Education and Child and Youth Care Counselling. Satisfactory results of a police record check and contact with 3 references. Minimum commitment one session (2.5 hours) per week for at least 3 months Coffee / Tea
