The Strathcona Health Society (SHS) is a non-profit society that operates the Strathcona Community Dental Clinic. The goal of the SHS is to provide high quality dental care, and dental health information for children, their families, and seniors in the inner city of Vancouver. The SHS is committed to increasing the dental health of children. Tooth decay is still the most chronic and common disease of childhood and most severely affects children from low income families.

The SHS is currently seeking to fill one Board of Director positions:

Member-at-large, Community: This position is available to residents who live and/ or work in Strathcona or East Vancouver. Our community member keeps the board informed on current trends and issues in the East Vancouver neighbourhoods and may be called upon to occasionally respond to urgent requests at the clinic such as signing documents.

Deliverables/Duties: 

General Duties:

 

Prepare for and attend board meetings
Work as a team member and support board decisions
Review financial documents including budgets and monthly and yearly financial statements and advise on the financial capacity of the organization
Monitor the performance of the organization in relation to its mission and objectives
Provide direction and support to the Executive Director as needed
Become familiar with the society’s by-laws and policies and procedures
Establish, review and monitor policies that guide core operational practices in accordance with the needs of the clinic, the BC Societies Act and any relevant government organizations regulating health clinics
Respond to urgent matters that may occasionally arise at the clinic that require board involvement
Participate in decision making by responding to/ voting on issues through email
Participate in hiring and performance evaluation of the Executive Director
Participate in the recruitment of new board members
Attend the Annual General Meeting
Attend the yearly board retreat when required
Attend community and/or outreach events on behalf of the clinic
Keep informed about community issues relevant to the mission and objectives of the Society

Qualifications: 

Board members must have:

A passion for healthcare, including oral health, familiarity with vulnerable populations in Vancouver, and an understanding of the barriers to healthcare in low-income neighbourhoods.

Sufficient time to devote to board activities each month (See below).

The willingness to work as a team to support board decisions.

The time to commit to a year term as a board member.

The SHS board welcomes applications from both experienced board members and those new to the not-for-profit sector.

About Strathcona Community Dental Clinic

The Strathcona Community Dental Clinic is located between the Strathcona Elementary School and the Strathcona Community Centre, nestled in the heart of Vancouver’s Strathcona neighbourhood. The clinic was founded in 2002 by a group of local leaders concerned about the oral health of children in the community. The goal was to set up an accessible clinic with an important outreach component and improve health outcomes.
