Position description: 

NatureKids BC is a nature exploration organization for children and their families. We help children get outdoors to explore, play, learn about and take action for nature and run an award-winning province-wide network of volunteer-led nature clubs for children ages 5-12 and their families. Through their participation in NatureKids BC, our vision is that children develop a love of nature, a lifelong connection to the natural world, and have the environmental literacy and skills to take action for nature. Our Board of Directors is now accepting applications for new members for the 2018-2019 fiscal year. The Directors of the Board set the strategic direction for the organization and are collectively accountable to the community, funders and other stakeholders. They are accountable for NatureKids BC’s performance in relation to its mission and strategic objectives and for the effective stewardship of financial and human resources.

  • Time commitment: Five hours monthly on average (preparation, meetings, committee work and consultation). Board meetings are held every other month, except during the summer, typically on the third Tuesday on the month. Directors may attend in person (meetings are typically held in the lower mainland) or by teleconference/Skype. 
  • Term: One year, elected annually at the Annual General Meeting
  • Location: The NatureKids BC office is located in North Vancouver but director work can be done remotely from anywhere in British Columbia.
  • Participate in the review of the mission and objectives of the organization and in the development of a strategic plan
  • Monitor the performance of the organization in relation to the strategic plan
  • Approve the budget and monitor financial performance in relation to it
  • Abide by the bylaws, code of conduct and other policies that apply to the board and identify and contribute to needed policy changes and additions (eg. Compliance with BC’s New Societies’ Act)
  • Establish, review and monitor policies that guide core operational practices (eg. financial management, human resource management)
  • Recruitment, release and annual performance review of the Executive Director
  • Recruitment of new board members and evaluation of the board
  • Keep informed about issues relevant to the mission and objectives of the organization
  • Representing and being an advocate for the organization in the community
  • Understand and demonstrate a commitment to NKBC’s mission and programs
  • Attend and participate in board meetings (by phone is an option), committee work and the Annual  General Meeting
  • Enthusiasm for NatureKids BC’s mission and strategic directions
  • Commitment to advocating for NatureKids BC, attending board meetings, and participating in working groups
  • Knowledge of the Child in Nature movement and community
  • A commitment of time
  • Positive attitude, willingness to be flexible and an openness to learning
  • Experience with charitable organizations and governance, or willingness to learn 
  • Knowledge of fundraising principles and best practices, or willingness to learn
  • Strong communication skills
