Academic Mentor for At-Risk Youth
Learning Buddies Network, founded by paediatrician Dr. Alisa Lipson, is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping struggling young children from inner-city elementary schools develop essential literacy and numeracy. Matching them with older positive role models, like you, help provide an opportunity for these struggling students to improve their self-esteem and allow them to believe, despite challenges they have faced, that they can succeed when someone is there to believe in them!
Our reading and math tutoring programmes run once a week, after school, at elementary schools across Metro Vancouver. By volunteering with LBN, volunteers take on significant responsibilities and develop leadership, communication and organization skills. You will have the opportunity to work directly with one child and develop a supportive mentoring relationship that will help foster building their learning skills, self-esteem and a positive attitude.
If you are looking for a meaningful volunteer experience, we are looking for you to join us! For programme details and to apply, please visit http://learningbuddiesnetwork.com/mentor-application-form/. We accept applicants on a rolling basis and our spots fill up quickly so please apply early to maximize your chances of getting into the programme of your choice!
You need TIME to devote to preparing for and attending tutoring sessions held each week. You need COMMITMENT to impart to your little buddy, who will respond with gratitude and improved skills and self- esteem. You need RESPONSIBILITY to be a reliable member of the team. You need a SENSE OF FUN and creativity!
If you enjoy volunteering with us, we will encourage you to apply for more senior leadership opportunities that we offer volunteers. One of them would be managing your own program with your own team of volunteers. You will be eligible for a volunteer certificate after volunteering with us for 30 hours.
