George Derby Care Centre Seeks Accountant for Board of Directors Position
Are you a certified general accountant? Are you interested in giving back to your community? Do you have an interest in the geriatric population?
George Derby Care Centre is currently looking for an accountant to complete our roster of directors composing our Board. We are a non-profit society hosting an independent living building and a long-term care home on our large property in Burnaby. This is a volunteer position providing governance to the society with a 3 to 4-hour commitment monthly with the exception of December and August.
The properties and the affairs of George Derby Centre (GDC) are directed and monitored by the Board of Directors of the Society. The Board is comprised of at least 7 and up to 13 persons.
Members, in exercising their authority and powers, shall always act with integrity and in good faith consistent with the GDC Constitution and Bylaws under the Societies Act of BC as well as Board policies.
No board member shall accept any remuneration for services rendered to George Derby Centre, nor have any financial interest in any contract, purchase, or any other matter in which George Derby Centre is involved.
Each board member shall be deemed to be a member of the GDC Society.
It is expected that each board member shall make every reasonable effort to attend board meetings which are held monthly on the last Thursday of every month except August, from 2pm to 5pm at George Derby Centre. It is also expected that each board member will make every reasonable effort to attend and participate in the meetings and activities.
The term of office is for 3 years, with the opportunity to extend for up to 3 terms.

It is expected that each board member shall belong to one, or more, of the board committees. Currently the Board Committees consist of:
An Executive Committee
Consists of the Board Chair, Vice Chair, immediate past chair and one other board member as elected by the board
Deals with emergency issues and decisions as they arise on behalf of the Board
A Finance Committee
responsibility of the committee shall include making recommendations to the Board regarding the purchase and sale of securities, investment of the funds of the Society and administration of any endowments or gifts received by the Society.
Develops the annual operating budget, reviews financial statements, considers capital expenses, interfaces with the auditors
A Quality & Risk Management Committee
reviews the quality of resident care and delivery of care and services and makes recommendations to the Board of Directors as required.
The Committee monitors key indicators and review reports as required
A Nominating Committee
Responsible for nominations to the board of directors
Responsible for the performance review of the Executive Director
