Position description: 

Teach Basic English to newcomers to Canada with a focus on developing English skills through a hands-on exploration of our Neighbourhood House. This is not a structured class with prearranged lesson plan. The volunteer teacher will have a free hand in choosing teaching material based on the interest and knowledge level of students.
Lessons include:
• Open conversation in English
• Newcomer’s information
• How to use community resources (bus, Skytrain, banking systems, shopping, etc.)
• Social interaction with neighbours
• Volunteer will be working two hours, two days per week
The classes are: Mon. 1-3pm & 5-7pm, Tues. 5:30-7pm, Wed. 1-2:30pm, Thurs. 1-3pm and 5-7pm, Fri. 9:15-10:45am (South House - 100-4460 Beresford Street)
Tuesday or Thursday afternoon (North House - 4908 Hastings Street)

  • Lead a group of adults through weekly conversations in English.
  • Prepare topics of discussions or lessons weekly.

Group facilitation skills are required. Some teaching experience preferred. Suitable for people working towards getting an ESL Teacher Certificate or instructors who have retired and have time to spare.
