Position description: 

The Eilzabeth Fry Society is looking for volunteers at the Alouette Correctional Centre for Women in Maple Ridge. It is a provincial correctional centre for women. Volunteers come in twice a month on Saturday afternoons and make cards and socialize with the women. This is an ideal position for any person wanting to gain insight into the Canadian Criminal Justice System. It is an opportunity for future law students, current criminology, social work and any other individuals interested in giving their time to  women in a prison setting. All supplies are provided.

Deliverables/Duties: 

As a  volunteer you need to be:

  • Able to engage with the clients (and build rapport)
  • Punctual and reliable
  • Willing to learn from others and be relatively flexible
Qualifications: 

In order to be a volunteer court runner you must:

  • Be 21 years of age
  • Provide three professional references
  • Successfully participate in an interview and orientation
  • Undergo a satisfactory criminal record check, and pass a clearance to volunteer in a prison setting
  • Have strong communication skills
  • Be reliable, responsible and caring
  • Be mature and non-judgmental
  • Knowledge of mental health and addiction is an asset
  • Be able to commit to two shifts a month
  • Be able to commit to minimum of 1 year of volunteering - after being cleared to volunteer by the prison
