Adult literacy tutors for CALP program(Community Adult Literacy Program)

Position description: 

Adult volunteers receive a free 12-hour training following which they are paired with adult learners one-on-one who they help improve their Reading/Writing/Numeracy or Digital skills. The program is very flexible where participants meet any day during the week at a time and location convenient to them. Tutors are supported with resources and ample opportunities for PD training.

A very rewarding experience and an opportunity to make a difference in the life of a learner by sharing with them the gift of literacy.

Training dates:  October 19 & November 2

                         9:30am - 3:30pm

 

Deliverables/Duties: 
  • Prepare weekly lessons and homework, based on students’ individual learning program developed by CALP
  • Meet one-on-one with the learner for weekly sessions
  • Maintain positive, supportive and appropriate contact with the learner
  • Maintain program confidentiality
  • Report monthly progress to CALP staff
  • Report all issues and concerns to CALP staff promptly
  • May participate in social events organized by CALP
  • May participate in in-service training workshops for professional development
Qualifications: 
  • Grade 12 graduation or equivalent
  • Excellent reading, writing and spelling skills .English fluency.
  • Experience relating to a broad range of people, including adults facing multiple challenges an asset
  • Cross- cultural experience an asset
  • Previous coaching or teaching experience an asset

  • Respectful attitude of  shared adulthood with our student population
  • Awareness  of boundaries of  tutoring role
  • Compassionate attitude  towards  learners dealing with barriers such as addictions, abuse and poverty
  • Resourcefulness in planning lessons and explaining concepts
  • Receptive to learning new skills and strategies
