Position: Vegetable Garden and Sustainability Science Interpreter
Reports to: Ken Spencer Science Park Gallery Curator and Science Facilitators
What is The Science Park?
The Ken Spencer Science Park engages visitors with sustainability issues through large-scale exhibits (themed on Transportation, Energy, Water, Housing, and Waste) as well as hands on outdoor exploration through outdoor lab activities, wetland pond investigations, and a Food area featuring a chicken coop, raised garden beds and compost bins. Science Park interpreter volunteers will be assisting with green programming covering these sustainability themes and areas, with a specific focus on upkeep and care of the vegetable gardens, and sharing their green thumb knowledge with visitors. Your role is to ensure that visitors have a positive experience and learn about sustainability in an interactive way!
What will you do?
Work closely with staff, other volunteers and visitors on various gardening tasks and other hands-on activities
Greet visitors in the Science Park and answer their questions
Represent Science World with enthusiasm
Assist the staff with general maintenance of the exhibits
Can you commit to
a 2-4 hour volunteer shift once a week
a minimum of 100 hours of volunteer time
attending our mandatory orientation session: Sunday, February 26th (8:30am to 2pm)

Monday to Friday 10:00am - 5:00pm
Weekends & Statutory holidays 10:00am 6:00pm
Thursdays in July & August 6:00pm - 9:00pm
Who will qualify for this role?
You have experience with vegetable gardening, and are happy to get your hands dirty!
You are passionate about sustainability science and would enjoy programming related to the themes and areas mentioned above (e.g. Waste theme - creating up-cycled projects with visitors; Food area - planting activities)
You are willing to work outdoors in all weather conditions
You are self-motivated, outgoing and approachable
You have experience working with children and their families
You are able to work in a team environment
You can easily adapt to changing roles and responsibilities
